Tranent is one of the oldest towns in East Lothian. It used to be an important mining town, with coal being worked there in the 13th century by the monks of Newbattle Abbey. With the closure of the mines, Tranent has become a commuter town, with the old pit bing now being a place to read the story of the Battle of Prestonpans.
The picture on the previous page is of a memorial to Jackie Crookston, one of 12 people killed by soldiers in 1797 when protesting against conscription into the British Army.
The sister of Robert Burns lived in Tranent for a short time in the 19th century.
